چکیده

This study describes the emergence of a multimodality modeling workshop involving a 3D computer model, aiming to facilitate the workshop participants’ learning of their self-generated astronomy topic – lunar libration. This qualitative study took place in designing learning environments in informal learning contexts that leveraged five university students’ interests and prior knowledge in astronomy, observation experiences and emerging questions. The findings show that the modified visual representation in a computer model improved the quality of their observation experiences and assisted them to consolidate their understanding of lunar libration. Further, computer-enhanced multimodality mediated by modeling software (i.e. Astronomicon) promoted not only learners’ selfdirected exploration but also collaborative discussion toward understanding of the lunar libration. We consider implications for promoting learner-generated topics supported by computer-enhanced multimodal modeling.

Venue Semantics: Multimedia Topic Modeling of Social Media Contents

With the rapid development of location-based social networks (LBSNs), multimedia topic modeling on location-related user generated contents (UGCs) for venues is strongly desired. However, most of the previous topic modeling approaches only work on single modality data, or correlated multimodal data. The intrinsic property of UGCs in LBSNs that the heterogeneous UGCs are generally independent ma...

Model-It: A Case Study of Learner-Centered Software Design for Supporting Model Building

Learner-centered software design (LCSD) guides the design of tasks, tools, and interfaces in order to support the unique needs of learners: growth, diversity and motivation. This paper presents a framework for LCSD and describes a case study of its application to the ScienceWare Model-It, a learner-centered tool to support scientific modeling and simulation. The complex task of constructing and...

Fuzzy particle swarm optimization with nearest-better neighborhood for multimodal optimization

In the last decades, many efforts have been made to solve multimodal optimization problems using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). To produce good results, these PSO algorithms need to specify some niching parameters to define the local neighborhood. In this paper, our motivation is to propose the novel neighborhood structures that remove undesirable niching parameters without sacrificing perf...

Multimodal Topic Labelling

Topics generated by topic models are typically presented as a list of topic terms. Automatic topic labelling is the task of generating a succinct label that summarises the theme or subject of a topic, with the intention of reducing the cognitive load of end-users when interpreting these topics. Traditionally, topic label systems focus on a single label modality, e.g. textual labels. In this wor...

A Joint Semantic Vector Representation Model for Text Clustering and Classification

Text clustering and classification are two main tasks of text mining. Feature selection plays the key role in the quality of the clustering and classification results. Although word-based features such as term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) vectors have been widely used in different applications, their shortcoming in capturing semantic concepts of text motivated researches to use...
